The Bedeque Area Historical Museum invites you to join us for the Loyalist Heritage Festival!
Our museum serves as the Island’s hub for Loyalist knowledge and displays the history of these early settlers. This year we are celebrating the 240th anniversary of the landing of the Bedeque Bay Loyalists. Tickets for the Loyalist Supper and Richard Wood concert can be purchased in advance. A Day in L.M.Montgomery's Classroom
This summer, step back in time to 1897-1898 and spend a day in L.M. Montgomery’s classroom with our educational children's tours!
For only $10 a person, your group will receive a 90 minute tour that consists of a 19th century classroom re-enactment, historic recess, and a historic craft. This tour is best suited to children aged 5-12. This tour would also be suitable as a birthday party. These tours can be booked for any day: Call, email, or visit the museum to book. Prices: $10 per person Minimum group size: 5 Maximum group size: 15 |
Holman Island Guided Tours
Have you ever admired Holman Island from the shores of Bedeque or Summerside? This summer we are offering a rare opportunity to go on a guided walking tour of the island! Participants will have the chance to visit the former site of the famous Island Park Hotel, learn about the Holman family legacy and the current work being done by the Nature Conservancy of Canada to protect the the island. The first dates of the season will be: Friday July 5th: Starting time 4:00 pm at Bedeque Museum Saturday July 6th: Starting time 5:00 at Bedeque Museum Prices: $40 - Adult $30 - Youth (MUST be old enough and capable to walk 3km with no break) |
Monday History Talks
Join us on Monday nights this summer to hear talks from historians and storytellers on a variety of topics from Prince Edward Island’s history. All talks are free of charge. Donations are appreciated.
Monday July 8, 7 pm – 'An A-Z: The Odd and Unusual on PEI' - Dutch Thompson, social historian and broadcaster of CBC radio’s ‘The Bygone Days’ will kick off the series with a talk on everything from Animals to Zeppelins:stories from the bygone days about bears, midwives, war heroes, lighthouse keepers and moonshine – and much else.
Monday July 15, 7 pm –'Talk: Loyalists and Slaves on the Island of St. John: 1784 and After' Jim Hornby, Charlottetown lawyer and author of Black Islanders will focus on the roots of the Island’s historical and ongoing Black community: enslaved persons of African or African-American descent brought here by soldiers and refugees from the American colonies after the Revolution. (This talk is funded by a P.E.I. Anti-racism Microgrant.)
Monday July 22 at 7 pm – Talk: ' Prince Edward Island and the Monarchy' – Doug Sobey, president of the Bedeque Area Historical Society will talk about the long-standing relationship of Prince Edward Island to the British monarchy which goes back to the naming of the Island and its counties in the 18th century and continued through some 21 royal visits over a period of 150 years. The talk is connected to our ‘P.E.I. and the Monarchy’ exhibit which opened in 2023.
Monday July 29 at 7 pm – Talk: 'Prince Edward Island and the American Revolution' – Mike Barbieri, an American Revolutionary war historian from Vermont and a Fernwood summer resident will talk about political and military activities of the American Revolution in relation to the Canadian Maritimes in general and Prince Edward Island in particular. He will chronicle those activities and address in broad terms their impact on the Island.
Monday August 5 at 7 pm – Talk: 'Dark Island: on the trail of UFOs, the Holman Homestead, and things that go bump in the night' - Wayne Wright of Summerside, artist, cartoonist, writer and poet will give a lighthearted guided tour of his own encounters with the mysterious and the paranormal. The Museum is showing a new exhibit ‘Wayne Wright – 100 Cartoons’ for this summer only.
Monday August 12 at 7 pm – Talk: 'William Wright and his Family: Loyalist Refugees from Westchester County, New York' – Doug Sobey will talk about William Wright and his immediate descendants and their importance in the Loyalist settlement of the area. The talk is in connection with new elements in our Loyalist display which features a poster on the Wright family.
Monday August 19 at 7 pm – Talk: 'Happy 150th Birthday, L.M. Montgomery!'– Dr. Kate Scarth of the L M Montgomery Institute of UPEI celebrates Montgomery’s 150th birthday by exploring how characters in her stories marked births and birthdays. Did they have parties and picnics? What did they eat? What did they wear? What did celebration mean to Montgomery, Anne, Emily, and other LMM characters?
